Our fanciful bookmark recalls a working drawing (ca. 1905) in The Met collection for a lampshade by Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933). The Gilded Age master’s lifelong fascination with light led him to find new ways to incorporate electric lighting into his designs. Beginning in 1899, he adapted his method of making stained-glass windows to the production of artful table lamps with colorful leaded-glass shades, frequently inspired by natural motifs. The Dragonfly Lamp was a popular Tiffany Studios design.
